About us

Formation is designed for individuals who identify as religiously unaffiliated and are seeking a sense of community.

These groups provide a space for people to explore their own answers to life's big questions, integrate diverse experiences, and cultivate practices of self-reflection and contemplation.

By participating in these groups, individuals can deepen their sense of inner calling and find ways to use their unique gifts and talents to make a positive impact in the world.

Overall, our groups offer a supportive and inclusive environment for individuals to connect with others, discover their own sense of purpose, and live more fully.

About us

Formation is a place to explore life's big questions outside of existing religious traditions. We offer questions, not answers, and share a framework for exploring those questions in community and through individual reflection.

We believe in the power of contemplation, community, and service to change people's lives, and hope to provide a counterweight to a culture that values the endless pursuit of money, status, and power.

Everything we do is done in the spirit of invitation. There are no "shoulds" or "musts" - no tests of purity or required beliefs. All are welcome, and our ultimate mission is to connect you more deeply to your own inner voice, wherever it may lead you.

1

Dinners

Most people first experience Formation by joining or hosting an open dinner.

These intimate evenings include food, music, meditation, and sharing around a theme.

Each month, we provide a theme and resources that anyone can used to host a Formation dinner with their friends or family.

2

Small Groups

The core of our community are 8-12 person small groups,
which we call "Formation Groups."

These groups are places to hear more deeply into your inner voice and to allow yourself to be deeply known by a welcoming group of people.

Groups are peer-led, and meet weekly for one year. They ask each of us how we might grow as humans and become more fully ourselves.

Retreats & Workshops

A few times a year, we hold retreats and workshops that go deeper into topics like:

-developing a mindfulness practice
-navigating transitions
-remembering mortality
-deepening self-compassion
-cultivating play and creativity
-values-led living

Retreats and workshops are typically offered on a sliding scale or donation-basis.

About us

Formation is a place to explore life's big questions outside of existing religious traditions. We offer questions, not answers, and share a framework for exploring those questions both in community and through individual reflection.

Invitations

Our community is built around a set of shared, secular-friendly practices for developing as a person.

Everything we do in Formation is done in the spirit of invitation, and these practices are no exception. There are no "shoulds" or "musts."

These practices merely provide a framework and shared language for what it might mean to grow in wholeheartedness on a secular path.

Here are the core invitations:

  • To spend a certain amount of time each day in contemplative silence (meditation, journaling, etc.).
  • To commit to joining a small group, allowing yourself to be deeply known by the group, sharing your joys and struggles.
  • To spend time with people across lines of difference, and to use that time to nurture authentic relationships.
  • To give generously of one's time, energy, and resources to those who don't have the resources needed to thrive.
  • To take care of yourself in mind, body, and spirit.
  • To  the "inward-outward journey," seeing growth as not just about self-actualization, but about finding the place where your "gifts and brokenness can meet the world’s deep needs."

Each individual may relate to these practices differently in different seasons of their lives.
